How Long Does It Take To Become A Teacher in Texas

You can become a teacher in as little as 18 months in Texas if you already have a bachelor’s degree and enroll in an alternative certification program. If you don’t have your bachelor’s degree, you can pursue your license through a traditional teaching program at a four-year college or university.

Texas offers multiple routes to teacher certification, whether you are starting fresh without a degree or looking to pivot careers with a bachelor’s already in hand. This guide will break down the typical timelines, key steps, and factors that can affect how long it takes to become a certified teacher in Texas—so you can choose the path that fits your goals and get started with confidence.

Different certification options

In Texas, there is more than one path to getting your teaching license. These different paths affect how long it takes to become a teacher. We have an in-depth guide on how to become a teacher in Texas, available for you to learn more.

Generally, understanding the timeline starts with whether or not you have a bachelor’s degree. You need this degree to teach in all areas except the Health Science Technology, Trades, and Industrial Education certifications. Here is how both paths generally break down:

Getting your license without your bachelor’s degree

You have to get a bachelor’s degree first. It typically takes full-time students four years to complete, but your experience may vary. If you intend to become a teacher while earning this degree, then you can pursue your teaching certification as part of your degree program.

Getting your license when you already have a degree

If you have your bachelor’s already, then you can move straight into an Educator Preparation Program (EPP). If your degree isn’t relevant to teaching, you can use an alternative certification program (ACP)

Programs will require a minimum of 150 clock-hours in coursework, 50 hours of field experience, and passing relevant TExES exams.

Additionally, both pathways must complete an application process that includes fingerprinting and background checks.

Factors that affect how long it takes to become a teacher in Texas

Every path to becoming a teacher is unique, but the following are the most common factors that can affect your timeline.

  1. Education level

If you do not currently hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college, you will first need to obtain one. This will add approximately four years to the process. Typically, the education preparation program is embedded in the degree program, which also includes clinical teaching or a 1-2 year internship. It also helps if you have a significant number of hours in the area that you want to teach. For example, if you were a biology major and were interested in teaching high school science, the prior coursework would not only help you qualify, but it would also help in the content exam preparation.

But if you already have a bachelor’s degree, you can be teaching in your own classroom in a matter of months. Alternative certification programs satisfy the coursework and internship requirements.

  1. Differences between certification programs

Not all certification programs are the same. Compare options based on cost, online availability, timeline, and more. You can complete the 240 Certification Program in around 12-18 months, with much of the training being online. This brings flexibility to your timeline. Additionally, 240 Tutoring offers resources for passing certification exams, including TExES study guides and practice tests….at no additional cost!

  1. Field experience requirements

With most alternative licensing programs, you must complete the minimum of 150 clock-hours of coursework and 50 hours of field experiences in a classroom prior to internship placements. Although there are some instances in which the timelines would vary, such as being a late hire, most candidates would begin working on coursework and field experience hours first (observing and interacting with students, under the direction of a certified teacher).

Side note…school district employment, such as working already as a teacher, or serving as a paraprofessional or a substitute, can often be counted toward these 50 hours!

Tips to get your teaching license quickly

If you need to get your teaching license quickly, there are a few tips you should consider:

  • Go with an alternative certification program. If you already have a bachelor’s degree, consider going with an alternative EPP instead of a post-baccalaureate or graduate program at a university. It is often the faster and less expensive option.
  • Prepare for teaching exams early, and get them out of the way. You will need to pass the subject-specific content TExES and the PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities) exams. Many districts also require passing an ESL exam, and you should consider getting this out of the way to make your job prospects wider.
  • Choose a high-demand subject area. Math and science are always in high demand for schools. However, also take the time to consider your interests and passions so you can set yourself up for a fulfilling career.
