What Can We Help You Find?

Starting a new career in education can be a worrisome task if you don’t know where to begin but with the right preparation program, support, and knowledge you can make your dream a reality! As a former elementary school teacher, I know first-hand what it takes to become a teacher in Texas. Today I am going to walk you through the process and give you some pro-tips to help you in whichever step of your teaching journey you’re in.

Role of an Elementary School Teacher

Most Elementary Schools in Texas offer Prekindergarten through Grade 5, with some school districts including grade 6.

The state’s teacher certification examinations (TExES) complement the grade-levels taught in elementary schools to help you be a highly-qualified candidate for the grade-level you wish to teach.

For example, the Core Subjects EC - 6 examination would allow you to teach all grades within an elementary school and even middle school for schools who are only through grade 5.

Texas currently offers over 55 TExES examinations for educators. For educators seeking a position in an elementary school you have many options for which subjects you could teach.

The EC - 6 Core Subjects examination would allow you to teach English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education.

This exam is most common for Texas elementary school teachers since it allows the flexibility to teach a self-contained classroom or a departmentalized grade-level, usually 3rd-6th grade. Prekindergarten through grade 2 are commonly self-contained in Texas allowing one teacher to teach all core subjects to their homeroom class.

Texas Elementary School Teacher Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree. In Texas, to be a teacher of record, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree. Your degree can be completed by attending an accredited college or university with an educator preparation program or your degree does not have to be in education. In Texas, there are many educator preparation programs, like 240 Certification, for candidates to become a certified teacher through alternative certification.
  • Complete an educator preparation program, also commonly referred to as an EPP. If you decide to take a traditional path to obtaining your bachelor’s degree in education, you will complete your EPP through your college or university. If you take the path of alternative certification you can use your bachelor’s degree to apply for an accredited EPP and become a certified teacher in as little as 18 months to 2 years.

Pass Exams

If you take the Core Subjects EC - 6 exam, you will be certified to teach all grades and subjects in a Texas elementary school. The Core Subjects EC - 6 exam assesses candidates over English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education. Starting in 2021, classroom teachers in Texas must also pass the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam for the issuance of five certification fields:

  • Early Childhood: EC – Grade 3
  • Core Subjects: EC – Grade 6
  • Core Subjects: Grades 4 – 8
  • English Language Arts and Reading Grades 4 – 8
  • English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies Grades 4– 8

Any core exams that all teachers in Texas have to take?

All classroom teachers must pass the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC–12 exam.  This exam assesses whether a candidate has the requisite knowledge and skills that an entry-level educator must possess to teach in public schools in Texas. You will also want to take the TExES ESL Supplemental exam if you are wanting to teach in an elementary school in Texas. Most school districts in Texas require teachers to have an ESL certification, so having this certification before trying to get hired is essential.

Apply for Certification

Once you have completed your bachelor’s degree, an EPP through either alternative certification or a traditional program, and passed all of your certification exams you are ready to apply for certification. You will need to log into your TEAL Account to apply for certification. Click on applications to access your ECOS, Educator Certification Online Service, account. It is best to wait until you have taken and passed all of your required certification exams to apply, so you will only need to pay the $78 fee one time.

Every educator in Texas must pass a background check and be fingerprinted to teach in Texas. You can check your fingerprint status through your ECOS account by logging into your TEAL account.

Find a Teaching Job

Texas splits their school districts into regions. Narrowing down the region you want to teach in and researching districts within that region will help your job search. Important information is listed on region and district websites. Most regions have large job fairs featuring representatives from top districts ready to interview you!

  • Job boards are also a great place to find job postings for multiple districts you are interested in teaching.

Maintain Compliance

  • Classroom teaching certifications need to be renewed every five years. Teachers must have 150 CPE (continuing professional education) hours to renew their certificate.
  • Certifications must be renewed through your ECOS account by logging into your TEAL account. Renewal status is based on completion of CPE hours earned.
