What Can We Help You Find?

Costs to become a teacher in Texas vary considerably depending on if you take a traditional or alternative certification route to teaching.

When you take a traditional route to certification all educator preparation program (EPP) costs are included in your tuition. However, when you choose alternative certification, you'll have to pay for an alternative certification program (ACP) after completing your bachelor's degree.

Certification Program Costs

Alternative certification programs can cost between $3,800 to upwards of $5,000.

Alternative certification programs (ACPs) consist of an 18 month to 2 year commitment through an approved program.

ACPs also require you to complete 150 or more coursework hours, 50 observation hours, and a one or two semester internship or clinical teaching experience.

Once you complete the ACP you will still have the costs of a traditional route to certification candidate for the cost of certification tests, applying for certification, and completing a background check and fingerprinting.

ACP v EPP Costs

In Texas there are two paths you can take to teacher certification, traditional or alternative certification (ACP).

The main difference between the two depends on if you have earned a Bachelor’s degree.

Traditional Route (EPP)

You can take a traditional route and go through an educator preparation program (EPP) through your college once you declare your major. Depending on which college you choose to attend depends on your costs.

Let's break down the costs of a 4-year education degree at a private school vs a public school in Texas.

If you choose to go to Texas Christian University (TCU) you will pay approximately $240,000 for a 4 year degree.

vs.

If you go to the University of North Texas (UNT) and earn the same degree in education you will pay approximately $44,000 after four years.

Your clinical, residency, or internship semester(s) is unpaid in a traditional EPP through your college, which differs from an ACP.

Alternative Route (ACP)

If you have received your Bachelor’s degree or are in your last semester of receiving your Bachelor’s degree then you will want to apply for an alternative certification program (ACP).

Alternative certification programs use the term EPP when describing their programs if they have received the accreditation from the State Board of Educator Certification (SBOE) as an approved EPP.

Alternative certification programs vary in costs but most programs are around $5,000 for the program. Some ACPs offer study materials for the TExES exams and offer paid internships for a year-long internship in the classroom; that's a great perk!

How Much Do The Exam Costs?

All TExES exams cost $116 except:

Exams costing $136:

  • Early Childhood: PK – 3
  • English Language Arts and Reading 4 – 8
  • English Language Arts and Reading 7 – 12
  • Health EC – 12
  • Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities for Trade and Industrial Education 6 – 12

Different Persona Examples

Let's take a look at two teacher candidates to determine their overall costs to become a teacher in Texas.

EPP Route

Our first teacher candidate decided to take the traditional route to certification through the University of North Texas (UNT). She completed her  internship year and received her bachelor's degree in education after four years costing her $44,000.

During her unpaid internship year, her college advisor recommended taking her certification exams before graduating. She is pursuing certification as an EC-6 teacher so she needed to take the following TExES exams:

  • Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) EC-12, $116
  • Core Subjects EC- 6, $116
  • Science of Teaching Reading (STR), $136
  • English as a Second Language, $116

After she passed her exams she applied for certification for $78 and paid $49 for fingerprinting to equal a grand total of $44,611.

ACP Route

Now let's look at our second teacher candidate. He is a career changer who has a Bachelor's degree in Science.

He decided to pursue the alternative certification route through 240 Certification. The cost of the ACP is $4,135 and includes 240 Tutoring exam prep study guides and materials at no extra cost.

After talking to his 240 program advisor they told him which certification tests he needed to take to pursue his certification in teaching high school science.

  • Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) EC-12, $116
  • Science 7-12, $116
  • English as a Second Language, $116

After he passed his exams using 240 Tutoring study guides, he applied for certification for $78 and paid $49 for fingerprinting to equal a grand total of $4,483.

Retake Fees

If you do not pass your exam you will have to pay the full price ($116-$200) for the overall exam fee to retake the exam.

If your exam has multiple subject areas you can pay the retake fee of $85 to retake one of the subject areas you did not pass.

If you did not pass two or more of the subject areas it would be beneficial to retake the overall exam and only pay for one testing session.

You will not have to retake any of the subject areas you previously passed, you can skip those sections when retaking the overall exam.

Additional Fees

After you have paid and passed your TExES certification tests you will also be required to:

  • Apply for certification, $78
  • Complete a Criminal Background Check and Fingerprinting, $49

How to Finance Your Certification?

Financial aid is not just for college students. Whether you're taking a traditional or alternative certification route, there is financial help for you.

Financial Aid

You will want to begin by applying for FAFSA, which is a free application to fill out for federal financial aid. Once you complete the application you will be able to see loan, grant, and scholarship options available to you based on the information you filled out of the application.

Scholarships are also available through the College of Education on many college campuses in Texas. Follow your college's scholarship and financial aid page to make sure you meet application deadlines to hopefully receive one of the available scholarships.

A TEACH Grant can help you by awarding grants to those who are completing or plan to complete a degree in education. If you meet the eligibility requirements you could earn up to $4,000 in grants a year.

Federal Pell Grants do not need to be paid back and are usually awarded to undergraduate students who have a dire financial need.

There are also some Texas school districts that offer reimbursement for TExES and PACT exams for current and future employees.
